What do copywriters do in advertising agencies?

Copywriters write copy. Copy is a text that is intended to make the reader take action. The end goal is usually for the reader to buy a product or service. The job of the copywriter is to find out the most compelling benefits that you provide and then to convey them simply and beautifully using words.

What do graphic designers do in advertising agencies?

Graphic designers choose fonts, colors, images, and ad layouts. They could also design logos for brands, merchandise, and so much more. Where a copywriter focuses on the words and punctuation used, the designer uses visuals to convey the brand message. If your business is active on social media, you could probably set up ads on your preferred platform fairly easily. Otherwise you can take out ads in newspapers, radio, tv, or even search engines like Google. Google ads can be very effective at targeting the right people. Is paid advertising better than content marketing?

This is a great question! Each of these have their own perks and downfalls.

Content marketing can be relatively inexpensive and attract clients for long after posting at no additional cost. However, a lot of up-front work is required to create the content and it can take a while to rank organically.

Paid advertising on the other hand can get lots of eyes on your business very quickly while you wait for your content to rank. Paid advertising can be a great way to target competitive keywords with buyer intent if you have the budget.

So when people ask me if they should focus on paid advertising or content marketing I always say: use both!

How do advertising agencies charge for services?

There are 3 ways that I know of for charging for marketing and advertising services:

  1. Monthly management fee
  2. Piecework (price based on specific deliverables)
  3. Commission-based

There should also be an additional budget for the ads themselves and other marketing materials.

Everyone has their preference when it comes to payment methods. Monthly management fees can offer great packages and consistent cost. Paying for a specific deliverable shows tangible work from the agency. And a commission-based pay structure offers the greatest incentive for the agency to do a good job.
