Christmas Eve we were shoveling snow but today I’m thinking about how many trees I want to plant in 2022. We planted hundreds of trees in 2021 and I’d love to be able to say we planted thousands next year.
The only way we are going to achieve this is by planting more saplings. The nursery costs plus transportation is much larger for adult trees anyways (not to mention the carbon footprint). If production (timber, fruit, sap, food for wildlife, etc.) or carbon reduction are to be considered, saplings are the way to go. By planting saplings densely and thinning the stand out over time you create even more resources.
Other native plants (shrubs, perennials, grasses, vines, groundcover, aquatic plants, etc.) and even a couple well placed adult trees will make for a complete landscape.
