A wildlife pond is an essential element for your landscape if you love native plants and local wildlife. A well designed pond will attract all kinds of animals looking for food, drink, and shelter. Birds, pollinators, amphibians small mammals, turtles, and more will thank you for choosing to build a wildlife pond.

What makes a wildlife pond unique is the elements that are included specifically for attracting and supporting wildlife. For example: we placed dead wood around the edges of the pond. Wood can provide a place for birds to perch, but more importantly, dragonflies use wet, rotting wood to lay their eggs. Another important element of the wildlife pond is an abundance of native plants and flowers for the local pollinators. As I mentioned in the video above, it is also important to have a final depth of above 2 feet so that the pond doesn’t freeze over completely in winter. This allows for toads to hibernate at the bottom of the pond. The water itself is valuable to all wildlife as a drinking source.
The best part about pond building (for me) is that it can be done in the hot summer months. I generally have to put my tree planting business on hold during the hottest months of the summer. Tree planting is still possible in the summer, it just requires a lot more attention and watering on your end. Aquatic plants on the other hand have no problems being planted in the summer since they are literally sitting in a big bowl of water. Since I also do snow removal in the winter, wildlife pond building allows me to have work in all 4 seasons.
