This year, I started providing lawncare services as I noticed it was a service a lot of my clients needed.
The high maintenance nature of monoculture grass lawns doesn’t really fit with my sustainable garden design principles so I’ve looked for ways to reduce the high impact of lawncare services. I do this by using battery powered equipment and recommending biweekly service to customers.
It is starting to get warmer now so 2 weeks is perfect, but in the spring 2 weeks of growth is a lot to cut! On the other hand, some lawns cut very easily even after 2 weeks of the heaviest spring growth.
These were the lawns that had other plants growing in them. Clover, wild strawberry, dandelions, and a whole bunch of other wildflowers and groundcovers that I didn’t recognize. The diverse mix of plants were so much easier to cut than the lawns with a thick fertilized mat of Kentucky bluegrass.
Then when I was looking at grass seed in Home Hardware I noticed a bag of white clover seeds and remembered that clover is a great option for increasing lawn biodiversity.
Clover is less maintenance than grass, it is a better source of food for pollinators, it adds nitrogen to the soil and quite honestly it is more enjoyable to walk on than grass.
I’m not saying you need to make the hardline switch to clover…
But next time you see a couple brown patches in your lawn, consider picking up a bag of white clover to overseed it with instead of grass.
